Gardenia taitensis

The national flower of the Cook Islands and French Polynesia, possessing white, star-shaped flowers which give off a beautiful fragrance. An evergreen shrub with dark green, glossy leaves, it can grow up to 4m. It likes a well-draining sandy/loamy soil mix, a balanced fertiliser and moderate watering and should be pruned (the dead flowers) to keep it orderly and healthy. It will grow best in a situation with dappled morning sun and afternoon shade.
